Friday, October 8th - BIG Change of Plans-HIGH SEAS!

 It was quite disappointing when we found out on Thursday Evening that our quick boat ride to Santorini, hike, dinner & shopping were all canceled because of high seas. We had to take a giant ferry with a load of many cars, cement trucks, and many other passengers. Our guides tried everything to get us there earlier - even airline tickets with no luck. It was a different kind of adventure!


This is the port of Heraklion where we will take a ferry to Santorini .... but we have some time to waste as the ferry does not leave until 4:15 PM.

W tour the archeological site of Knossos. It is the cultural center of the Minoan civilization. 


We say goodbye to George one of our tour guides. This is the last Backroads trip in Greece and he will be driving all of the bikes back to France. We load up on drinks before we enter the boat.

We saw big rigs pull on the boat-sand trucks, cement trucks, semi trucks, you name it, they loaded it. Elba, one of our guides drove the van on which was loaded with all of our luggage.

They booked us a room, but most of us did not use it except to use the bathroom. It was a 7.5 hour ferry ride. Backroads even tried to get us airline tickets, but no seats were available. We had to suck it up and travel slowly to Santorini!

A little merlot and OREGANO potato chips for the ride. They were good.


I read 4 days of the the LJS on line and then we played cards...spades & 4 point pitch.

Wednesday, October 5th - Our first Hiking Day!

Mike's pictures of the ancient Doric site of Lato.  A guide explained it ALL in TOO much detail:) Some of us had a little too much information :)  Hmm, this was the doorway to either the animal house...or the dining area, I don't know? After about a mile hike the group split into two. One group hiked 2.5 miles, the Krista Direct or the second choice was to hike the Krista Challenge via Gorge for 3.5 with boulder climbing! Mike says he just had to follow the "smiley face" markers as he pulled a groin muscle last month and has a shoulder problem. Lynn choose the boulder climbing! Mike's view! After hike we head back to our hotel. We were supposed to have a boat tour to a small island called Spinlonga where it housed people with leprosy but it was canceled due to wind. Saturday, Road Trip to Meteora!

Mike and I hired a guide to take us to see the monasteries. It was a long day as it was a 4 hour trip to get there, but worth it. Our guide Theo was a talker so we learned all about Greece, culture, religion, his love of football, his team ARIS and his family.  Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989. The Eastern Orthodox monks began construction estimated in the 13th to 14th century. It is near the town of Klabaka.  Originally there were 24 monasteries on top of the rocks. Today there are 6. All materials had to be hoisted up by ropes and a pulley system.  Since it is deemed a spiritual and holy place, women must wear skirts and men must wear pants. We had to rent/buy pants and a wrap around skirt. I ended up taking my wrap around to the next stop so I didn't have to pay for another wrap. I felt it was messy and unnecessary, but we all complied.
